Queensland has announced two new priority areas to accelerate housing development in the state.

The state government has announced two priority development zones (PDAs) that can offer more than 10,000 new homes in the Moreton Bay and Redland City areas.

The PDA is a designated land area in Queensland that aims to provide developments that meet community needs and stimulate economic growth.

The latest North Harbor PDA aims to deliver more than 3,700 new homes over the next 15 years, initially releasing up to 200 homes in Burpengary East, 50 km north of Brisbane CBD.

The PDA will build on the existing Northport development project, which currently has 3,000 residents and is considered one of five important projects in the Moreton Bay Regional Economic Development Strategy for 2020-2041.

According to the 2021 census data, Burpengary East has 2148 private homes. Of the 1911 houses, 107 were semi-detached houses, and 10 were listed as apartments.

Development has continued since the census, but the new PDA can almost double the housing options for its 6658 residents.

“The construction of apartments and separate housing will further boost the economy and provide another option for those who want to live in the city of Moreton Bay,” said Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery.

“The development of this site at the dock will unlock a new local marine industry, from shipbuilding to repairs, bringing more skilled jobs to our residents.”

The second PDA spans 890 hectares of southern Thorneland and is located 32 km east of Brisbane CBD.

The proposal aims to unlock 8,000 new homes, with the initial release area offering 900 homes, including 20% ​​for affordable and social housing.

According to the 2021 census data, there are 6779 homes in the area, of which 5593 are houses, 743 semi-detached houses and 63 apartments.

With this PDA, 8,000 of the residents in the area can be used for 19,263 new homes.

The PDA also proposed a $4 million investment to upgrade the intersection of Springacre Rd and Boundard Rd to manage growth in the region.

Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Minister and Assistant Minister for Planning, Housing and Better Supervision Rebecca Young said the government will work with the Council to plan a 20-year PDA.

“It’s time for governments and communities at all levels to come together and work hard to make the best 20-year plan for South Thoran,” she said.

“The Crisafulli government is delivering on our commitment to unlock, establish and promote housing options across the state.”
