President Trump congratulated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his independence day in the country, saying in a letter that the American people believe in Ukraine’s future and respect the sacrifices of their people.

“Dear Mr. President: On behalf of the American people, I offer my congratulations and warmest wishes to you and the brave people of Ukraine,” Trump said in a letter shared by Zelensky in an article on social platform X earlier Sunday.

Trump’s letter continued: “The Ukrainian people have an indestructible spirit, and the courage of your country has inspired many people. As you commemorate this important day, know that the United States will respect your battle, respect your sacrifice, and believe in your future as an independent country.”

The letter comes from Trump’s attempt to promote the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine. Trump met with Zelensky and European leaders three days after hosting a high-stakes summit held by Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

While the president emerged from the meeting with some momentum, Russian officials said progress had slowed down and the prospects for the meeting between Zelensky and Putin were not coming.

Trump reiterated his desire to end the war in his letter to Zelensky.

“It is a time to end the meaningless killing. The United States supports a negotiated solution that leads to a lasting, lasting peace that ends the bloody and safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty and dignity,” the U.S. president wrote. “God bless Ukraine.”

Ukrainian leaders thanked Trump for “showing heartfelt congratulations to Ukraine’s Independence Day” and expressed their gratitude to the United States for their support.

“We thank you for your kind words to the Ukrainian people and for the United States for fighting side by side with Ukraine to defend the most valuable things: independence, freedom and peace,” Zelensky wrote in his post. “We believe that by working together, we can end this war and achieve true peace for Ukraine.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
