President Trump said former President Carter was “happy” in a media outlet in the Oval Office on Thursday.
Carter died in December 2024 and won the title of longest-standing president in U.S. history. The former president of Georgia Plains was respected by politicians on both sides of the aisle and won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote awareness of human rights.
“Jimmy Carter died a happy man. Do you know why? Because he is not the worst president, Joe Biden.”
The president’s remarks refer to his “reciprocal” tariffs, which he promised to increase the country’s economic growth through historical figures that contrast with previous governments.
“I think when the whole thing happens, you’re going to see some amazing numbers. That’s happening,” he said.
Trump has previously said dozens of countries have called for a deal with U.S. efforts to improve trade relations.
“Now, everyone wants to make a deal, if they don’t want to make a deal, then, make a deal for him because that’s going to happen,” Trump said in the Oval Office.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attended the White House on Thursday to help represent the EU’s trade agreement in response to the president’s 20% tariff on member states.
The EU currently pays 10% of U.S. exports due to the president’s 90-day pause on taxes, but leaders share that they hope to reach a deal with Washington soon.
Global concerns have been raised about the impact tariffs will have on international markets, and U.S. CEOs and economists question whether the country’s manufacturing industry can grow rapidly to meet consumer demand.
Trump insisted that changes were made to ensure that the U.S. claims to treat the U.S. as “unfairly” as it happened in previous years.
“I think we’ll do better this time because you’ll see that the numbers we’re accepting are astronomy and we’re charging a lot of money with tariffs,” the president told reporters.
He added: “We are treated very unfairly and it’s hard for countries to get used to the fact that they can’t do this to us anymore because we have a real president. We have a president who knows it all.”
