President Trump told reporters on Monday that he plans to visit Texas on Friday as a deadly flash flood broke out over the weekend in central Texas. In six counties, at least 100 people died, including more than twenty counselors and young campers at Christian summer camps.

“That was a terrible event, a terrible event,” Trump said. “That’s definitely true in Texas, and it was a big surprise in the evening.”

It is not clear where Trump will visit. The flood occurred along the Guadalupe River in Texas, about an hour northwest of San Antonio. From Thursday to early hours of Friday, rains and rains caused deadly flash floods in towns such as Kerrville, Ingram and Hunt as well as summer camps including Mystic Camp.

Democrats pointed out that the Trump administration cuts the National Weather Service, a potential reason why flood victims have not received better warnings. The New York Times reported that local officials avoided installing more complex warning systems due to costs, and several key weather service offices nearby were vacant at the time, although some vacancies predated the current government.

The White House said on Monday that blaming Trump for floods was a “degenerate lie.”

Trump signed a disaster statement on Sunday, freeing federal funds and plans to assist in the response.

More rainfall plans were planned to hit the area in Monday. The Department of State Services extended its flood surveillance until Monday night, reaching most of central Texas.
