Texas Republicans re-introduce legislation to increase penalties for protesting police assaults

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) will reintroduce legislation in recent protests in Los Angeles to increase penalties for police assaults.

Gonzalez’s previous legislation proposed in 2023 aims to “invest time and civil fines for attacking law enforcement officers or interfering in their formal duties” and released the Police Services Act (COPS Act) under the media on Monday.

“This weekend, the chaos released by the Los Angeles mobs is nothing more than peaceful protests, and it is anarchy,” Gonzalez said in a press release.

“Radical activists damaged border patrols and ice trucks while these agents were on duty and reported injuries. It’s time to emphasize a very clear message: If you hurt law enforcement, you will face serious consequences.” “This week, I will introduce the Police Act in Congress to increase allegations against anyone attacking our law enforcement officers, or to prevent them from performing their formal duties.”

According to Gonzales’ release, the Police Act (COPS ACT) hopes to take action, including adding a year to the time spent in prison, “for anyone who forcibly assaults, resists, opposes, obstructs, intimidates or interferes with federal officials in their performance of their duties or performs their duties.”
