Steak’N Shake has officially launched Bitcoin payments through Thunderbolt Network, after an announcement on May 9. At the time, fast food chains mocked their plans to integrate BTC, which caused excitement from the Bitcoin community. Today, this is the cash register, or better yet, the Bitcoin registry option.
As of today, customers can pay for their meals in Bitcoin at Steak’N Shake locations across the United States. This marks an important step in mainstream Bitcoin adoption, as the chain serves over 100 million customers each year and now has the option to use lightning for instant, low-cost transactions.
The company announced the news on X this morning, confirming that Thunder Network payments are officially supported in the store.
Follow up, they articulated the scale of implementation – it was not a small test or pilot program. This is the complete introduction of their system.
Lightning Network is Bitcoin’s second layer solution designed for fast, scalable and low-cost payments, perfect for point-of-sale purchases like burgers and fries. Steak’N shake customers can now scan the Lightning QR code at checkout using any supported wallet at checkout and complete the transaction in seconds. The system uses a backend payment processor to process real-time conversions to USD, ensuring stability and ease of use for customers and merchants.
In previous reports by Bitcoin Magazine, even the importance of the suggestion of the move was noted, and now it is official, it confirmed that Steak’n Shake was one of the first major fast food brands to embrace Bitcoin completely through lightning. This goes beyond the occasional “Bitcoin accepted here” logo; it is a practical simplified payment option that reflects the promise of Bitcoin integration.
With tools like Lightning Network making payments faster and easier to obtain, Steak’N Shake positioned itself at the forefront of the transition to practical, everyday BTC utilities.
This update may mark a larger trend on the horizon. As more and more brands watch consumer behavior and the availability of Lightning Network, Steak’N Shake’s move could trigger a wave of similar integrations.
