Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) said he was “greatly worried” that President Trump would “cave” for Russian President Vladimir Putin because he ended the war in Ukraine.
Schumer joined CNN’s ITU on Sunday, with host Dana Bash asking him about the latest developments between Trump, Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an effort to resolve the war.
“What I fear most is that Dana is that Trump is only going to fall into Putin. That’s always the overall sign,” Schumer said. “Of course, the bottom line is very simple, if we’re going to Putin, if Trump falls into Putin…this is bad in three very bad ways.”
Schumer argued that the United States “abandoned Ukraine” was unfavorable for sacrificing the country during more than three years of war.
He pointed out that this is also unfavorable for Western societies that oppose Putin in Ukraine, as it will “weak” the United States’ alliance.
The third thing, “worst of all,” said New York Democrats, if Trump had ever caved with Putin ending the war, it would send dangerous signals to dictators around the world.
“It sends a signal to every dictator in China, North Korea, Iran that if you stand up and bully Trump, you will work hard,” Schumer said.
“So, I’m very worried about where he is going. I think he’s in a position where he feels he can sell Zelensky.” “He kind of said “yes” and didn’t. But overall, the trend is very, very bad.”
Trump and Zelensky met Saturday before Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome. The White House said the meeting was “productive” and there will be more details afterwards.
Zelensky said the two discussed “a lot of one-on-one” and he hoped to achieve results, including a complete and unconditional ceasefire with Russia.
The discussion came just days after the White House said Trump’s patience with Zelensky was “very thin”. Trump is also not excited about Putin either. He said he thinks Putin may be stringed up after the latest deadly strike against Ukraine.
