California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said California will sue the Trump administration together on Monday to lift protests against federal immigration attacks in Los Angeles during the National Guard deployment.
Newsom said in an interview Sunday night that the lawsuit will challenge Trump’s federalization of the California National Guard without the state’s consent, a move that has little precedent in U.S. history.
“Donald Trump created the conditions you see on TV tonight. He intensified the conditions. You know, he ignited the well-known game. He has been fueling this fire since he announced that he was taking over the National Guard, an illegal act, an immoral act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act, an act that was inconsistent,” Newsom told MSNBC. ”
“Tomorrow we will test the theory through litigation,” he added.
Newsom was asked to elaborate on the lawsuit that, under Trump’s executive order, “particularly stated that in the case of the Department of Defense (Defense), they must coordinate with the national governor. They never coordinate with the national governor.”
Newsom noted that he had deployed the National Guard to respond to various emergencies.
“We have no problem working with local law enforcement, working in a mutual aid system. But there is a protocol, there is a procedure. He doesn’t care about that. It’s the worst part, he’s totally lying.”
The governor pointed out Trump’s truth-seeking social position earlier Sunday, saying the National Guard did “excellent job.” Newsom said that national forces had not even been deployed at that time.
He added: “It’s Orwellian, just lying to people, unconstitutional, illegal acts, his chaos. We’re working to clean it up.”
Later in the interview, the news agency was asked about comments from border tsar Tom Homan, indicating that he did not rule out efforts to arrest Newsom or Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
“Come with me and arrest me. Let’s get it over, tough guy, you know? I shouldn’t die. But I care about my community. I care about this community,” he continued.
“Then are they doing it? These guys need to grow up. They need to stop and we need to push back. Newsom added. “So, Tom, arrest me.” Let’s go. ”
