Most Oppose Trump’s Use of Detention Facilities: CBS Poll

According to a new CBS News/YouGov poll, most Americans oppose President Trump’s use of immigration detention centers in the wider crackdown on immigration.

When asked in the survey whether they “approve or oppose the Trump administration’s use of detention facilities to block ways people might attempt to deport”, 42% expressed support, while 58% opposed.

The “big and beautiful bill” passed by the Republican Party earlier this month includes billions of dollars to increase immigration enforcement under Trump has greatly increased.

The government and Florida leaders recently gathered to set up detention centers in a remote area of the Everglades to keep immigrants awaiting deportation.

The website, known as “Alligator Alcatraz”, opened earlier this month, providing software-holding units to hundreds of detainees through partnerships, with the federal government funding, and the Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM) will oversee the buildings as well as management.

Last week, Democrats said detained immigrants faced “inhumane” treatment there, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the conditions of the facility.

“We have higher standards at the federal level of detention centers than most local or state centers or even federal prisons. The standards are very high,” Noem said in NBC’s “Meeting Media” at the time.

In the CBS News/Yougov poll, 53% said: “The way Donald Trump and Republicans are dealing with immigration” is “too difficult”, while 18% said “not difficult enough” and 29% said it is “right.”

Most say the government deports more than they deport and officials have not given priority to dangerous criminals.

The survey was conducted from July 16 to 18, with 2,343 people, a gap of about 2.5 percentage points.
