House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.) said Tuesday he has not heard from the White House since meeting with President Trump and other congressional leaders on Monday.
Jeffries We haven’t heard from the White House since Monday’s White House meeting amid the government shutdown.
“Obviously, they want to shut down the government,” he added. “We are ready to work together to make it reopen, but to meet the needs of the American people with a bipartisan spending agreement while addressing the Republican medical crisis for everyday Americans across the country.”
Congressional leaders held a meeting with Trump on Monday, saying they did not make progress, which would prevent the government from closing later this week.
Congressional leaders were unable to reach a deal for a Fixed Spend bill that would allow lawmakers to work on how to move forward, and the federal government officially shut down at midnight on Wednesday.
The shutdown became in trouble after lawmakers voted to decide on funding packages for two parking kits, one of which was the Republicans’ “clean” bill and the other that included Democratic priorities.
The White House welcomes the struggle for the government shutdown, sees it as a political loser for Democrats, and is a way to unilaterally push its own policy interests.
“The Trump administration wants the direct clean CR to continue to fund the administration – the exact same proposal that the Democrats supported six months ago, under the Biden administration, that’s 13 times.”
