House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.) has referred former FBI Director James Comey’s indictment as a “shameful attack on the rule of law” and believes that the criminal justice system has been “replaced weapons” by the Trump administration.
“James Comey is a shameful attack on the rule of law. Donald Trump and his assistants at the Department of Justice (DOJ) are completely out of control and have weaponized the criminal justice system into weapons against their perceived opponents,” Jeffries said in a statement Thursday night.
“The malicious prosecution against James Comey has no obvious basis in law or fact, and the department’s conscience lawyers know that,” the House Minority Leader added. “Any complicity in this vicious corruption will face accountability.”
Comey was indicted by a federal grand jury on Thursday for false statements and obstruction of Congressional lawsuits in Senate testimony in 2020. The indictment filed in the East District of Virginia’s lawyers’ office comes days after President Trump calls for prosecution of his political enemies. Comey could face up to five years in prison, according to the office.
The president celebrates the prosecution of the president’s long-time critic Comey.
“American justice! One of the worst people this country has ever contacted is James Comey, a former head of corruption at the FBI.”
Comey responded by claiming his innocence, adding that he was not “feared”.
“I’m heartbroken in the Justice Department, but I’m confident in the federal justice system. I’m innocent. So let’s go to the trial.”
Comey allegedly lied to the Senate committee in 2020, while being questioned in 2016, according to the indictment.
“Comie said he did not authorize someone from the FBI to become an anonymous source. According to the indictment, the statement was wrong.”
The indictment comes days after U.S. Attorney Erik Siebert, in the Eastern District of Virginia, resigned, rather than filing charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James (D). According to reports, Sibert found that there was not enough evidence to support the mortgage fraud charge against James.
Lindsey Halligan, a former Trump defense attorney, was selected as the interim replacement for Siebert. Halligan, who practices insurance laws but has not tried federal cases, signed an indictment against Comey.
