A group of 25 House Democratic veterans wrote to President Trump on Thursday, remarks to military leaders earlier this week.
The letter, written by Rep. Pat Ryan (DN.Y.) and signed by 24 other Democratic veterans, specifically criticized the president for saying that American cities should be the “training ground” for the military on Tuesday.
“They are very unsafe places and we’ll figure them out one by one,” Trump told more than 800 admirals and generals in Quantico, Virginia. “This will be a major part of some people in this room. This is also a war. This is also a war. “It’s a war.”
Democratic veterans blow up Trump’s speech as “open partisan”, saying the president’s advice was “so deep non-Americans that may have broken the foundational principles of our democratic structure and the non-political military of a country that have built this country.”
The Trump administration deployed the National Guard to the U.S. capital in August while controlling local police forces. This follows the deployment of the California National Guard and Marine Corps in Los Angeles in June, following a protest against immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) raid.
On Sunday, the Pentagon deployed 200 Oregon National Guards to Portland by opposing Gov. Tina Kotek, State Attorney General Dan Rayfield and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson. Trump has also formed a task force of various federal law enforcement agencies to send it to Memphis, where agents will arrive in the city this week.
In his speech Tuesday, Trump also suggested that federal immigration enforcement in Chicago has increased and he may receive a guard force next.
Under the POSSE COMITATUS Act of 1878, the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force are prohibited from being used for civilian law enforcement. The National Guard is part of the Army and Air Force.
The letter claimed that Trump’s actions “will directly harm our military in the long run – making every American less secure” and threatened “the cornerstone principle of a non-political military established by this country.”
The letter added: “Man and woman who sacrifice everything to wear uniforms should not and cannot be used as political pawns to start a war against your political enemy.”
The letter comes at the PAC last week of Ryan, who had toured the Army in Iraq twice in Iraq last week, aimed to recruit Democratic candidates with public service experience.
“I didn’t risk my life for 27 months of battle,” Ryan told CNN on Thursday.
The mountain has been contacted by the White House to comment on the letter.
