Heggs seeks death penalty for convicted Fort Hood shooter

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is seeking death penalty for former Army Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people and 13 people on Fort Hood, Texas, and dozens of people were injured about 16 years ago in Fort Hood, Texas.

Hegseth asked President Trump to shoot 13 people at an army base near Keeling, Texas in November 2009 and a military execution of Hasan at a military base near Keeling, Texas.

“I am 100% committed to ensuring Nidal Hasan’s death penalty is carried out. The savage terrorist should face the toughest legal punishment for his mass shooting in Fort Hood in 2009. Victims and survivors should be free of delays.”

The White House has no comment on the record.

If approved by the White House, it would be the first military execution in more than sixty years. The last military execution took place in 1961 when former soldier John Bennett was hanged.

In early November 2009, Hassan opened fire at service members with a semi-automatic pistol, killing 13 people, including a pregnant soldier. Hassan admitted to the shooting and was sentenced to death in 2013.

He was convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of murder by a military jury.

The Supreme Court denied Hassan’s appeal in April.

Hasan is on death row at the American Discipline Barracks in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Hasan was born in 1970 in Arlington, Virginia. He is the son of Palestinian immigrant parents. Hassan served in the Army for nearly twenty years.

“Those attempts to help the United States undermine the Taliban’s Shariah law as the Supreme Law of the Land and to reign over God’s enemies with a law like God, and to replace it with other things worth fighting/killing,” Hassan wrote in a 2017 letter.
