Former Ministry of Defense spokesman: Pentagon under Hegseth

The former top Pentagon spokesman said in an article published Sunday that the Defense Department was in a state of “chaos” under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

“The Pentagon has been in a mess for a month. From leaks of sensitive operational plans to mass shootings, dysfunction is now the president’s main distraction – he should get better distraction from senior leadership,” John Ullyot, who worked as acting assistant for public affairs before resigning last week, wrote in the Politico Magazine Magazine magazine.

“President Donald Trump has a good record of his senior officials. Given that, it’s hard to see Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth play for a longer time.”

The Department of Defense has come under scrutiny in recent weeks for sensitive information and several high-profile shootings to officials.

Three top Pentagon officials were suspended and later fired last week.

Their dismissal came during an investigation into the department’s leak. Three fired Pentagon officials – Dan Caldwell, Colin Carroll and Darin Selnick said in a joint statement released on social platform X on Saturday that they were “very disappointed with the way we serve at the Department of Defense”. The organization also wrote that they “understand the importance of information security and work hard to protect it every day” and claimed that “the unfounded attacks of unnamed Pentagon officials on the way out have ruined our character.”

Ullyot similarly noted in his Sunday view: “Defense officials working at Hegseth tried to smear aides to journalists and claimed they were fired for leaking sensitive information, as part of an investigation ordered earlier this month.”

“Hegseth is now presiding on a strange and confusing clearance that will leave him without the two closest advisers for more than a decade – Caldwell and Selnick – without the Chief of Staff and his deputy,” Ullyot mentioned. “According to rumors about the building, there may be more shooting.”

“In short, the building was in chaos under Hergs,” said the former top Pentagon spokesman. “Luckily, I was not a victim of his senior leadership. Like Caldwell and Selnick, I was a longtime supporter of the secretary. I wrote an article in December when his Senate confirmed it was in danger and I strongly argued that he was the best person in the Pentagon needed serious reform.”
