El Salvador President Nayib Bukele on Thursday dismissed claims that Kilmar Abrego Garcia was abused during El Salvador’s detention.
He also blamed the “mainstream media” and the “collapsed Western judiciary” because he said he was accepted as a truth without evidence.
“But the man was not tortured and hadn’t lost weight. In fact, the photos show him gaining weight during his detention,” Buckley wrote on social platform X on Thursday. “There are a lot of shots on different days, including his meeting with Sen. Van Hollen (Democratic Maryland) who himself confirmed the man seemed good.”
He added: “If he was tortured, drowsy and hungry, why did he look so good in every picture? Why did he gain weight? Why didn’t he have any bruises or even dark circles?”
El Salvador leaders paired the post with videos and photos of Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly deported to Central American countries in March in his prison dormitory, making national headlines earlier this year.
According to court documents at the end of last month, Buckle’s position came a few days after Abrego Garcia, who recounted what he called “psychological torture” and physical abuse, who said he was held in the notorious Cecot prison in El Salvador. The man, who had lived in Maryland under protection orders, also said he suffered from sleep deprivation while in custody.
The prison is known for being overcrowded, with bunk beds and toilets without mattresses shared by many prisoners. According to court documents, the lights remained, “did not have windows, fans or air conditioning despite the warm and humid climate of the area.”
When he arrived, he was “kicked in his boots on his legs, hitting his head and arms, making him change clothes faster”, according to Abrego Garcia, whose head was shaved by a dull razor, among other charges.

Abrego Garcia faces criminal charges against him for a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee, when he was charged with trafficking more than 100 times and related conspiracy charges. He pleaded not guilty in court last month.
Another court application said Abrego Garcia’s attorneys asked him to continue his jail after awaiting trial in a Tennessee prison as prosecutors threatened to deport him to a third country after his potential release. The request was approved.
