Former President Biden said Friday he had no regrets when he decided to run for reelection in 2024, arguing that other Democrats did not challenge him in the party’s primary because they knew they would lose.
The former president refuted the criticism when asked about Democrats’ concerns over whether he should quit earlier.
“Then why didn’t they hit me?” Biden told reporters at the New Castle in Delas on Friday. “Because I’ll beat them.”
Biden announced in late April 2023 that he would run again – but his re-election campaign has questions about his age and skepticism, involving his ability to perform his presidency.
He withdrew the game on July 21, 2024, and had a disastrous debate with then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in less than a month. The forum has raised concerns about Biden’s age and acuity, as he seems to have difficulty answering questions or staying alert.
Former Vice President Harris became the party’s nominee and eventually lost to Trump in November.
Concerns about Biden’s mental fitness reappeared after audio leaked in Axios’ interview with special counsel Robert Hur. The discussion centered on confidential documents surrounding the former president’s private residence, and has illuminated Biden’s memory since his time as vice president.
The Trump administration later released the full audio. Hur found in his investigation that Biden kept the documents “intentionally” but the jury might simply regard him as an “old man with poor memory” and no charges were filed.
His use of a car pen in his final weeks of office and his recent prostate cancer diagnosis also exacerbated his so-called mental decline.
On Friday, Biden also slammed the author of a new book that outlined the author who fell during his 2024 reelection campaign. CNN host Jake Tapper and Axios journalist Alex Thompson wrote: “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Coverage and Disastrous Choice.”
“You can see that I’m mentally incompetent, I can’t walk – I can beat the hell of both of them,” Biden told reporters Friday.
He also suggested in a previous interview that even if he withdrew the game earlier, “I don’t think it’s important.”
