Real-time update: Trump’s layoff threat is pending

The federal government closed overnight Wednesday as Democrats and Republicans failed to make the September 30 deadline.

President Trump’s administration threatens to reduce mass shootings and potential plans if funds expire. The union filed a lawsuit Tuesday in an attempt to prevent work actions outside of traditional leave, saying the threat is “not only illegal, but also immoral and unreasonable.”

Senators forced a two-vote shutdown Tuesday night, neither side failed to pass the 60 votes required for the short-term financing bill. The Democrats’ version includes the healthcare funding they requested in exchange for supporting positioning measures.

The Republican version will fund the government from November 21 to November 21. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (RSS.D.) said the financing bill is not a place for health care policies.
