House Democrats conducted a series of investigations into Trump’s border Tsar Tom Homan because he accepted part of an impact challenge that he received $50,000 in cash from undercover FBI agents.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat of the House Judiciary Committee, urged the Justice Department to hand over the reported audiotape, showing Homan accepted the money last year, part of the FBI Sting. Meanwhile, Rep. Bennie Thompson, a ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee, hopes that the group’s Republicans demand Homan’s testimony – if necessary.
However, Republicans have scrutinized Trump’s review, and Democrats have not breathed for Trump’s allies to help with any formal investigation into the allegations against Homan. Instead, they accepted a bag of cash on Trump’s border tsar, conducting cash from federal agents on paid plans to detect government contracts.
“Republicans are not as independent and equal branches of the administration,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.) said in announcing the Democratic investigation this week. “They are just reckless and extreme rubber stamps for Donald Trump’s out-of-control agenda, and we won’t wait until next November to bring most people back.”
As a minority party, Democrats face a daunting climb in their efforts to investigate Homan’s alleged misconduct. For example, without Gavels, they would not be able to conduct formal committee hearings, and they would not have the right to issue subpoenas to force witness testimony, which is a power reserved for the majority.
Still, the Democrats’ partisan investigation could put Homan’s allegations in the headlines in the coming weeks, bringing a central message theme to the party’s drive home into next year’s midterm: that is, Trump’s second term is a prevalence of corruption and abuse, and the Republican leaders in the Tower do nothing.
Democrats not only want Homan videos, but also gain insight into the investigation being shut down once Trump officials landed.

The White House initially did not deny that Homan took the money, but said it was a “blatant political investigation, with no evidence of illegal activities found”, noting that he had no role in the federal contract decision.
But on Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt denied that he accepted the payment, saying: “Mr. Homan never took the $50,000 you meant, so you should be straightforward, first place.”
Later, when appearing on Fox News’ “Ingraham Angle” Monday night, Homan denied the wrongdoing, but when asked about the money, Leavitt’s claim was not repeated.
“Look, I did nothing in crime. I did nothing in violation of the law,” Homan said.
Such transactions may be illegal. Public officials may face federal bribery for any such arrangement. Even people outside the government are prohibited from improperly affecting federal contracts, regardless of the ability of anyone to deliver on their promises.
Republican leaders who control two congresses have shown no plans to review the allegations. Hill contacted House Judicial Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Homeland Security Chairman Andrew Garbarino (RN.Y.) and House Oversight and Government Reform Commission Chairman James Comer (R-KY.). No one responded.
Democrats are even more suspicious.
Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) joined other members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to ask the FBI and the Justice Department to explain their role in closing an investigation under former President Biden, which is underway as the president transitions.

Raskin will also take the lead in exploring the Justice Department’s handling of the case from the House Judicial Panel. Thompson plans to conduct a separate investigation into Homan in the House of Representatives’ Bureau of Homeland Security, which has its role in supervising Trump’s immigration crackdown put him within his jurisdiction.
For the House Homeland Security Committee, Homan’s review will include a review of $170 billion in border security and immigration enforcement funds in Trump’s A Big Beauty Act.
The legislation includes historic levels of funding to detain immigrants before possible deportation – a costly commitment not used by the government in the past given the cost and logistical challenges of holding such a large number of people.
Doing so requires substantial outsourcing to private companies – Homan may be able to influence, Ruskin said.
