President Trump said Saturday that he will award Ben Carson, his first Housing and Urban Development (HUD) secretary, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

“We will present Dr. Ben Carson with the highest civilian award and honor in our country. This is our highest military award. This is our highest military award. This is our highest military award.

Trump said he planned to hold a Carson ceremony at the White House, but there was no designated time.

“Congratulations, Ben,” Trump added. “He doesn’t know. He doesn’t know. I hope he’s happy.”

Carson, a former neurosurgeon, failed to run for the Republican presidential nomination against Trump in 2016. The president then patted him as HUD secretary. Carson served as President of the National Faith of Trump’s campaign in the 2024 election.

Trump recently said he would fatally shoot the Presidential Medal of Freedom at an open-air event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 and award it to conservative activist Charlie Kirk after his death.

Trump also said earlier this month he would award his long-time political ally, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the same honor after he was seriously injured in a car accident.
