Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) said that sending the National Guard to his city in the new New York Times opinion was “the wrong solution to the real problem.”
“Reducing crime here does not require armed members of the National Guard to occupy our city as the White House continues to threaten us. Chicagoans, including survivors of violence, are opposed to such extreme measures.”
He added: “Public defenders are the wrong solution to a real problem. If President Trump listened to the city’s leaders, he would recognize that Chicago had just experienced record numbers of homicides, the safest summer since the 1960s, and the result of effective collaboration between the community and law enforcement.”
On Sunday, President Trump said he “will not fight Chicago” despite his recent social media posts showing Big Windy City in the Apocalypse and hint at the upcoming war.
Trump told reporters that we won’t deal with it when questioned whether he threatens to fight Chicago. We want to clean up our city. ”
The president added: “We’re going to clean them up, so they’re not going to kill five people every weekend. It’s not war. It’s common sense.”
Last week, Trump said it was a question, not when he moved the National Guard to Chicago, citing the city’s problems with gun violence.
“Okay, we’re going. I didn’t say when. We’re going,” Trump said before. “Look, I have an obligation. It’s not a political matter. I have an obligation.”
The mountain has been contacted by the White House for comment.
