Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has filed a lawsuit to demand a seat in the battle between Texas Democratic Caucus Chairman Gene Wu in the fight against re-division.
“What are the dangers here? It’s not just the future of Texas. If a small number of stubborn lawmakers choose to run out of clocks today, they can do it for anyone, regularly or special meetings, and have the potential to go bankrupt in the state in an attempt to succeed,” Abbott’s Texas Supreme Court lawsuit read from Abbott.
Texas House Democrats left the state Sunday to deny Republicans’ legislative quorum, part of an effort to prevent Republicans from redrawing the Texas congressional map.
“On the grounds of Chicago…fight for the rights of Texans and all Americans,” Wu said in an article on social platform X later Sunday.
Wu had previously dismissed Abbott’s threat to evacuate Democrats from the Texas Legislature after they left the state
“Frankly, Democrats said, ‘Come on,’” Wu said in a CNN interview on Monday, speaking about the threat to the seats of lawmakers.
Abbott’s lawsuit argues that Democrats leaving Texas “abandon official duties required by the Constitution, which would allow legislation to pass a 30-day meeting that is critical to the needs of Texans such as flood mitigation, real estate tax breaks and public school reforms.”
“Public records show that absconded Democrats even impose money to pay the fines incurred for absence,” the lawsuit continues. “The problem here is that the damage caused by these members may last forever. They may return from the quorum for a few days off and then vote again if they do not please their Legislative Council and then abscon again.”
The mountain has been in contact with Wu and the Texas Democratic Caucus.
“Texas Gov. Greg Abbott can imitate everything he wants, but his baseless lawsuit to remove Texas House Democratic leader Rep. Gene Wu is not only morally shocking, but also a weak attempt to intimidate Trump-style.”
