Austin (Nexstar) – Texas’s House officially came to a standstill Monday as more than fifty Democratic House members fled the state to prevent the House from getting 100 members to call. Their main purpose is to stop redrawing the U.S. Congress map in Texas, with President Donald Trump hoping to turn five U.S. House seats from Democrats to Republicans.
In leadership leading the legal person, the Republican governor of Greg Abbott, Texas, said he said he evacuated his seat and asked them to be charged with bribery to threaten lawmakers-requesting them to solicit funds to support their trip. After the vote, he followed up, demanding that Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officials bring back the missing House members by force and demanding that the Texas Rangers investigate the bribery charge.

Although Abbott has authorized DPS officials to arrest criminals, their authority is not outside Texas.
“Once they leave the state, it’s almost impossible to touch them,” said Seth Barrett Tillman, a professor of law at Menos. Tillman said he doesn’t believe Abbott is dishonest, but he does think his arguments won’t be raised in court. “The governor certainly can’t send his sheriff or marshal-or of course it shouldn’t send non-government workers like private bail to cross national boundaries to catch people and bring them back to Texas. I don’t think it’s violence.”
The governments in New York, Illinois and Massachusetts (which many members are currently here) are unlikely to sympathize with Abbott’s cause. But the US president may be.
“We are looking for everything that maintains this important work,” said a spokesman for the Texas House of Representatives Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock). “We will continue to work with everyone to make sure there is nothing on the table.”
“I didn’t think about it (the federal government is involved),” Tillman said. “They won’t violate any federal law I know, if not, I don’t know federal powers, which marshals, other agents of the government could be included in a state in Texas, grab a member of the legislature and transfer him to the state boundaries without the actions that are basically called kidnapping.”
“The court is very hesitant to overturn the election”
On Sunday night, Abbott listed the non-binding 2021 opinion from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who said: “For any member who fails to appear (appear), I will invoke Texas Attorney General KP-0382 to remove the missing Democrats from membership in Texas.”
Despite the citation, the opinion does not propose a claim that the governor has the power to remove members of the Texas Legislature. Instead, it claims that the District Court can declare a abandoned seat and therefore treats the seat as a resignation. But the Texas Supreme Court has been quoted as saying abandonment is a form of resignation that requires lawmakers to effectively abandon their position.

Tillman noted that he was not an expert in Texas campaign law and said the trend called opposition political spending “bribery” and that Trump had a lot of criticism of media criticism in his first administration.
