President Trump said on Tuesday night that Israel agreed to “finalize” the “necessary conditions” of a 60-day ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza Strip and pushed for a deal by Palestinian militant group Hamas, warning that “it won’t get better.”
Trump wrote in a “Truth Social” post: “My representative held a long and productive meeting with the Israelis in Gaza today.
“The Egyptians who work for peace will make this final offer,” the president added. “I hope that Hamas has made this deal for the benefit of the Middle East, because it won’t get better – it will only get worse.”
It is unclear whether Hamas, designated by the U.S. government as a terrorist organization, will accept the terms of the deal.
The announcement comes after Trump meets Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House next week, where two leaders will discuss trade, the consequences of the Israel-Iran conflict and the Israel-Hamas war.
“He’s here. We’re going to talk a lot. We’re going to talk about the great success we’ve had in Iran… We’ve had incredible success,” Trump said Tuesday morning. “We’re going to talk about Gaza.”
Trump has pushed both Israel and Hamas to a ceasefire and freed hostages, which will help lead to the end of the Gaza war.
“Get a deal in Gaza,” Trump wrote in Sunday’s truth social networking. “Come on hostages!!! DJT.”
Previous attempts to ensure a ceasefire between the two sides failed. Steve Witkoff, the government’s Middle East envoy, proposed a two-month truce in late May that would be held with Hamas in late May with 10 Israeli hostages and 18 bodies from Gaza. In return, Israel will release more than 1,000 Palestinian detainees. Hamas provided the amendment, and Witkoff said the response from the militant group was “completely unacceptable”.
Catari officials on Tuesday proposed a new proposal to Israel and Hamas with the support of the Trump administration, multiple media said. On the same day, Israeli Secretary of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer met with Trump administration officials in Washington, who US officials told The Mountain Tuesday.
