President Trump called for an agreement on Israel’s war in Gaza and on the releasing of hostages held on the territory.
“A deal was reached in Gaza,” Trump said in an early morning social post about truth.
Trump pushed for a deal and the release of hostages came after the recent U.S. clashes between Israel and Iran through strikes on nuclear sites and ceasefires between the two countries.
The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, with the Hamas attacks, in which 1,200 people were killed by the organization and more than 250 were taken hostage. The Israelis also killed more than 55,000 people in the territory, most of the infrastructure was destroyed, and the supply needed to survive and operate was large.
The Washington Post reported on Friday that Trump said he believed in a quick way to get a ceasefire in Gaza.
“I’m just talking to some people who are involved,” Trump said. “A bad situation is happening in Gaza…we think we’re going to have a ceasefire next week.”
The United States recently rejected a UN Security Council resolution urging a “immediate and permanent” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, as the measure does not include hostages held by Hamas as a condition for a truce.
