Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations Amir-Saeid Iravani condemned the U.S.-Israel conflict intervention and said the country’s military will decide its response after President Trump ordered the bombing of three Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday.
“Although Iran reserves the defense of its blatant aggression and its Israeli agents under international law, Iran has repeatedly warned to avoid a troubled U.S. regime in order to avoid falling into trouble,” he said at the UN. “The timing, nature and size of Iran’s proportionate reaction will be determined by its armed forces.”
The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Sunday afternoon at the escalating war. Iran, the United States and Israel were among the countries that talked about the attack during the meeting.
Iravani described the action as the United States helping Israel implement its “evil agenda.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Trump on Saturday for directing the U.S. strike at Iran’s nuclear site.
“President Trump and I often say, ‘Peace by strength.’ First is strength, then peace.
Iravani said the Israeli Prime Minister hijacked “U.S. foreign policy, dragging the United States into another expensive, unfounded war.”
Dorothy Shea, the interim ambassador to the United Nations, spoke before Iravani and defended Trump’s actions.
“Iran has long covered its nuclear weapons program and has insisted on a good-will effort in recent negotiations … The United States has finally arrived as it defends its allies and defends our own citizens and interests,” she said in an explanation of Saturday’s bombing.
Shea told the council that Iran has “responsible for the pain and countless deaths throughout the Middle East for decades. The Iranian government and its agents have also killed many Americans, including American servicemen in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
She accused Iranian officials of intensifying “hostility and rhetoric” in recent weeks.
