Today, the Norwegian government announced plans to temporarily ban the establishment of new Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining data centers.

The government concluded that it would be better to redirect electricity to other industries and economic sectors, which would be better for national interests.

“The Labor government clearly intends to limit cryptocurrency mining in Norway,” said Karianne Tung, Minister of Digitalization and Public Government.

The ruling Labor Party attributes the upcoming ban to excessive electricity consumption in power-intensive bitcoin and crypto mining operations, which says it has any benefit to the wider economy.

“Cryptocurrency mining is very powerful and has few ways of bringing employment and income to local communities,” she added.

“In the fall of 2025, a temporary ban can be imposed in the fall of 2025,” the government said.
