Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has announced his support for progressive primary challenger Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.), his first major endorsement to the incumbents in the upcoming cycle.
Sanders announced his support for Michigan Rep. Donavan McKinney (D), who previously gave him a second congressional approval after Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) endorsed him last month. Sanders said in a statement that McKinney understands the struggles the working-class communities face in Detroit and across the country because he himself experienced them.
“He was a former union leader, and he devoted himself to standing with the working people and preparing to lead the fight against Donald Trump, oligarchy and corporate interests that prioritize profits,” Sanders said. “I urge all Michigan to join me in supporting Donavan’s campaign.”
Despite facing a rigorous scrutiny on the left, he aims to win after facing a major challenge last year. But they hope to succeed in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District this time.
McKinney pursues Thanedar for his enormous fortune and tries to portray him as a touching millionaire. He compared two-term congressmen to President Trump and Elon Musk on the campaign video and slammed him for borrowing a lot of money during the last campaign.
“Senator Sanders has long been a progressive champion for working-class Americans in the United States, and I am honored to be recognized by him,” McKinney said in a statement. “His political courage and commitment to doing the right thing-even if it is not popular, even if it is difficult, even if it is difficult, even if it is alone-is a real inspiration for me, and his commitment to fighting for a more just and equal America.”
Thanedar initially ran as his house seat in 2022, but the left faces attacks due to his self-funding and other issues. He insists that he has not changed politically and remains popular in the region.
McKinney also received support from the Progressive Group Justice Democratic Party.
