House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (DN.Y.) is blasting President Trump for clashes in Los Angeles, saying the president has purposefully escalated tensions to distract the country.

Speaking at the Capitol reporter, Jeffries opposed Trump’s aggressive deportation policy and defended American rights to protest such government action, if done peacefully.

He accused Trump of “crazy and inciting things on the ground” of distracting the domestic policy agenda Jeffries called “failure.”

“Donald Trump is clearly trying to disperse the fact that his administration has failed,” Jeffries said.

The Democratic leader also refuted Trump’s argument that by interfering in the Los Angeles immigration protests, he simply brought law and order to a city where local officials failed to do it.

Jeffries noted that Trump refused to intervene on January 6, 2021, when a mob of his supporters attacked lawyers at the U.S. Capitol to block certificates from Trump’s election several months ago. In January, Trump pardoned a mob of about 1,500 people – a move that gave Trump and his supporters “zero credibility” demanding orders claiming law and order, according to Jeffries.

“Donald Trump was not the leader on January 6. He did not send the National Guard to stop the violent mob, which defeated the police with brutal beatings in a bland situation,” Jeffries said. “This person who might have detained the National Guard – certainly not sent them – is telling the country about law and order?”

“Let me take a break. We don’t feel you, especially with this issue.” “Donald Trump and all the minions who support him – Jazz, extremists – have zero credibility on this issue. Republicans have become parties to the illegal and chaotic parties.”

Amid the turmoil in Los Angeles, Trump activated members of the National Guard over the weekend, drawing criticism from California officials, especially Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), who said local law enforcement agencies were enough to handle the situation without federal forces’ participation. Newsom announced on Monday that he would sue the government in federal intervention.

Newsom posted on X, saying: “This is a created crisis. He is creating fear and terror to take over state militias and violate the U.S. Constitution.”

Jeffries is standing behind Newsom, with former House member La Mayor Karen Bass (D) arguing that California local and state law enforcement officers have the capacity and manpower to protect First Amendment rights and public safety.

“The LAPD, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, other local law enforcement departments and the California Highway Patrol appear to have the ability to ensure a resolution to the situation – allowing protests against peaceful protests and taking responsibility,” Jeffries said.
