China’s trade talks “a bit stagnant” Bessent said

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday that talks with China were in a dilemma amid U.S. trade tensions with the country.

“I would say they’re a little stuck,” Best told Fox News’s U.S.-China trade negotiations Bret Byer. “I believe we will have more negotiations with them in the next few weeks, and I believe we can have a call between the president and the president and the chairman of the (Communist) Party XI (Jinping) at some point.”

On Wednesday, a federal court ruled that an emergency law did not grant Trump unilateral powers to impose tariffs near each country. The ruling blocked the president’s “Liberation Day” tariffs in April and introduced an early order to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday that the judges in the court “boldly abused their judicial power to usurp President Trump’s power” after the ruling.

The federal court of appeals then canceled its first ruling Thursday, but, on the same day, a separate federal court blocked most of the president’s tariffs.

President’s first months at the White House, the president’s tariff policy has tense relations with long-time allies such as Canada and the EU, driving global economic uncertainty and rattled markets.

Republican strategist Karl Rove said in an opinion article to the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday that Trump’s tariff rhetoric could make the Republicans the majority in Congress.

“Republicans should want the president to truly believe in reciprocity, and the policy is that if countries lower tariffs, we will lower our tariffs. He should have confidence that the United States can compete if the arena level.”
