President Trump said on Tuesday that Canada is “considering” his proposal to join the U.S. as the 51st state in exchange for cost-free protection through the proposed Golden Dome missile defense system.

“I told Canada that it would be a big fan of being part of our fabulous Golden Dome system, and if they keep a separate but unequal country, it would cost $61 billion, but if they become the 51st state we cherish, they would cost $0,” Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Society on Tuesday.

“They are considering an offer!” the president added.

As of Tuesday night, Canadian officials have not spoken about Trump’s latest remarks, but Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has repeatedly said that under no circumstances will his country join the United States.

Carney’s recent election victory was seen by many as his push to reject Trump’s meditation on Canada’s 51st state.

Trump announced last week that the United States has officially chosen the Golden Dome building, a missile defense system that will create a network of satellites to detect, track and potentially intercept incoming ballistic missiles.

Trump claims the project will cost $175 billion to build and “full operation” within three years, and will also include Canada’s safety net.

“Canada calls us, they want to be part of it. So we’re going to talk to them; they want to be protected, too,” Trump said at the White House.

The BBC reported that Carney’s office confirmed last week that the two countries had “active discussions” between existing and new security plans, such as the Golden Dome.

Carney spokesman Audrey Champoux told the BBC: “Canadians have given the Prime Minister a strong mission to have a comprehensive new security and economic relationship with the United States.”

“To this end, the Prime Minister and his ministers are having extensive and constructive discussions with their U.S. counterparts. These discussions naturally include strengthening (North American Aerospace Defense Command) and related initiatives such as the Golden Dome,” she said.
