President Trump will resume commercial fishing at the National Ocean Monument after practicing being stopped by Democratic predecessors.
Trump is expected to issue a notice Friday to restore all 4,913 square miles of commercial fishing access to the Northeast Canyon and Ocean National Monument on the Massachusetts coast.
The declaration was first reported by NH Journal.
The National Monument was established by former President Obama to protect the deep-sea canyon with a unique ecosystem. The government said at the time that these ecosystems were significantly affected by climate change.
The monument is home to 54 species of corals and is a feedlot for species including whales, dolphins, turtles and 10 species of sharks.
Trump reopened the monument for commercial fishing in his first semester of office. Former President Biden reversed the decision and Trump is now recovering.
The White House said the move would “be supported by ensuring unrestricted U.S. coastal waters to the crucial Maine lobster industry.”
It also declared that protection in the Obama and Biden era is “not necessary for proper care and management of monuments, as many fish are highly relocated, not unique to the region and have been protected by existing laws.”
But environmentalists slammed the move.
“The Northeast Canyon and Bay are a truly special place: a living science lab, a refuge for creatures as diverse as cold water corals and sperm whales. Its status as a national monument means it is permanently protected by commercial fishing,” Brad Sewell, Brad Sewell, general manager of the National Defense Commission of Natural Resources, said in a written statement. “Trump’s move to remove these protections is illegal and we are confident it won’t stand.” ”
