Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a new interview that the proposal to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine is “going in the right direction”, but there are still some details that “need to be fine-tuned”.
In an interview on Thursday preview on CBS News, host Margaret Brennan asked Russian diplomats about President Trump’s advice this week that they were “very close to the deal” and that they “should be done now, do that.”
When asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees with Trump’s comments, the US president believed – I think it’s right, I think we’re heading in the right direction. ”
“The president’s statement refers to an agreement that we are ready to reach, but there are still some specific points (elements) that need to be fine-tuned,” he continued. “And we are busy with this exact process.”
Lavrov said Trump “has not clarified the elements of the deal, so it is inappropriate for me to do so.”
The remarks come as the Trump administration attempts to increase pressure on a deal with Russia and Ukraine and warns that the United States will work to negotiate an end to the war if a resolution is not reached soon.
Vice President Vance reiterated the threat on Wednesday.
“We have made very clear proposals to the Russians and Ukrainians, and it’s time for them to say “yes” or let the United States leave the process,” Vance said during a visit to India.
Details of the proposal have not been made public, but Trump administration officials have provided the deal to many media outlets. The report shows that the deal will include our recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected on Wednesday.
“Ukraine will not legally recognize the Crimean occupation,” he said. “There is nothing to talk about here.”
Trump slammed the truth in his response, “This statement is very harmful to peaceful negotiations with Russia, and a few years ago, Crimea lost that under the auspices of President Barack Hussein Obama, and it was not even a point of discussion.
“The statement issued by Zelenskyy today will only extend the “killing field” and no one wants it!” Trump added. “We’re very close to a deal, but now, no ‘uncarded’ person should be done.
Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Moscow to meet Putin this week. Lavrov will not confirm the meeting clearly, but when asked about what Putin told Witkoff at the meeting, Lavrov said: “We continue to contact the United States, involving Ukraine.”
“There are several signs that we are heading in the right direction,” he continued. “First, because President Trump is probably the only leader on earth who recognizes the need to address the root cause of this situation, when he said that incorporating Ukraine into NATO was a huge mistake, a mistake in the Biden administration, and he wanted to correct that.”
