Rep. James Cleben (DC) took a page from President Trump’s script on Friday, blaming the media for the declining shift in approval ratings.
MSNBC’s Ali Velshi pointed out that Democrats believe that the lack of news is the reason for the decline in voters’ belief in the party, especially after the huge losses caused in the 2024 general election. Clyburn delayed the concept backwards, pointing his finger at the news agency.
“I think the message from the Democratic Party is a good message,” the South Carolina Democrat told the “Last Word” host Friday night. “What I’m going to say is that we have to rely on the media to deliver it.”
He pointed to the Washington Post and criticized the relationship between owner Jeff Bezos and Trump.
“For example, if we have the Washington Post, it’s the idea of being a dictator, and we have other media entities that seem to push the narrative, which will draw their newspaper or television’s eyes into their televisions, rather than real hearings or reports to our work.”
His comments were posted when the poll showed that the party’s approval had declined.
CNN’s CNN survey released in mid-March found that Democratic preference ratings reached a record low. In the poll, 54% of respondents said they had an overall negative view of the party, while 29% were the opposite. 16% had no comment.
The subsequent poll, which was unveiled last month and next month by Harvard/Harris, came up with similar results.
Clyburn praised Velshi’s coverage despite criticism of the media landscape.
“I have to rely on someone like you,” he said in the clip highlighted by Mediaite. “You do a great job in that. That’s why I love to be at your show on weekends because you have a good substantive report on the issues around you.”
He added: “But when you have people who say we won’t do fact checks, we worry if you’re telling the truth or not. Just let the report go.
The scrutiny of news organizations by lawmakers is similar to that of Trump, who has also intensified his attacks on public broadcasters and media, and the president said he was particularly criticizing him.
Latest examples include the White House hatred with the Associated Press, his “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Harris and Congress’ lawsuit over pressure on Congress to deprive NPR and PBS federal funds.
