President Trump said he doesn’t want to discuss his 2028 plan, but said “so many” demanded that he run for a third term, a move prohibited by the Constitution.
Trump was asked about his comments in an interview earlier Sunday, saying he was “no joke” about his third term and said there were potential ways to get him to seek another term.
“I’m not looking at that, but I’ll tell you that I have more people asking me to have a third semester, which in a sense is the fourth term, because another election (the 2020 election) is completely manipulated, so Trump is actually a fourth term,” when asked if his comments early meant he “don’t plan to take office on January 20 on January 20.”
Trump has repeatedly touted what he calls the success of the administration, saying that this is why people want him to take office.
When a reporter pointed out that the Constitution limits the presidency to two terms, Trump interrupted: “I don’t even want to talk about it.”
“I just tell you, I have more people saying, ‘Please run again’,” Trump said. “We have a long way to go before we even consider that, but I have a lot of people.”
Trump poached his heels when reporters asked if this was “the proper precedent for setting, even if not your position.”
“I don’t even want to talk about the third semester because you have a long time no matter how you look at it,” Trump said in his response.
He added: “We have a long time. We have nearly four years left, and it’s a long time, but despite a lot of people saying you have to run again. They like the work we are doing. Most importantly, they like the work we are doing.”
Trump expressed a similar view in an interview with NBC News Sunday morning, saying many people wanted him to run, but “I focus on the current” administration. But, he said, he was not “joking” when he mentioned the possibility of a third term.
Trump has raised the idea of running several times since his election, including a recent event on St. Patrick’s Day when he told the Irish Prime Minister that he hopes to celebrate “at least” three more times again.
“When I said, ‘at least,’at least,’ they were absolutely crazy,’ “So, thank you so much for being here.”
Last month, Trump asked a group of people in the White House: “Should I run again? Tell me.” He proposed the idea at a party with House Republicans after the November election victory.
Although this is unconstitutional, the idea is booming in some circles. The 22nd Amendment limits individuals to two presidency terms.
Rep. Andy Ogles (r-tenn.) proposed an amendment to the constitution in January that would allow Trump to compete for another term in the White House.
In a statement at the time, Ogles said Trump “proves himself as the only person in modern history who can reverse the decline of the nation and restore greatness of the United States, and he must give him the time needed to achieve this.”
