The University of Alabama said one of the doctoral students has been arrested by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), adding to the growing list of foreign students targeted by the Trump administration.
“The University of Alabama recently learned that a doctoral student has been detained by federal immigration authorities. Federal privacy laws restrict content about individual students’ sharing,” the university said Wednesday.
The student Iranian country Alireza Doroudi was determined by the university’s newspaper Crimson White. Doroudi, who has a student visa, was detained on Tuesday and it is unclear any charges he faces.
The mountain has been contacted by the Department of Homeland Security for comment.
Other foreign students targeted by the Trump administration have somehow participated in the pro-Palestinian protests. The government is seeking to exploit a law that says the secretary of state can expel non-citizens who threaten state foreign policy to these people.
“Our fear is over. Donald Trump (Border Tsar) Tom Homan and Ice hit a cold, vicious dagger in the heart of the UA international community,” the University of Alabama Democrat said in a statement.
Students from several high-profile universities across the country have been detained under the Trump administration’s crackdown. Doroudi was arrested the same week as Rumeysa Ozturk’s Ph.D. Tufts University student.
