According to a survey by the NBC News Decision Station, 60% of Americans surveyed said they disapprove of President Trump’s way of handling trade and tariffs.
In the poll conducted in early June, 45% of respondents said they strongly opposed Trump’s handling of the issue, while 15% said they were somewhat dissatisfied.
Another 19% of respondents said they strongly approve of the way the president handles the issue, while 21% said they were somewhat approving.
The latest poll results are similar to a survey conducted in mid-April that showed 61% of respondents disapproved of his handling of the issue and approved 39%.
That April poll came after Trump announced more than $600 billion in import taxes for goods from almost all U.S. trading partners, including nearly 100% tariffs on Chinese goods.
Trump soon succumbed to pressure from bond markets and congressional Republicans to reduce his initial tariffs to 10% of 90 days, a July 8 deadline.
Trump officials touted plans to reach 90 deals within 90 days, but so far, only an agreement has been announced with the UK, while also tying tariffs with China.
In the survey, Trump’s overall approval rate was 45%, while 55% disapproved.
The “Trade and Tariffs” category was one of his worst problems. Only the “Inflation and Cost of Living” scored poorly, with 61% disapproval and 39% approved.
Border security and immigration remained his top priority and received 51% approval and 49% objection.
The poll was conducted from May 30 to June 10, 2025 and included 19,410 adults. The error margin is 2.1 percentage points.
