Four Victorian homes, including the High Country Spaceship-style cabin, were named in Australia’s most special house of the year.
Houses Magazine awards 2025 house awards were presented in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland for multiple residences.
The new house below 200 m2 is a small sawmill by Mansfield designer Robbie Walker.

In Carlton, the property of the building was won by the Heritage Environment Award.
The terrace of about the 1870s was turned into a house, where there was a garden studio for the owner to write and paint.
The Carlton House remodel and addition of Lovell Burton Architecture also won awards.
This historic cottage has been expanded and renovated to combine family-friendly touches such as matte concrete floors for kids to ride on their bikes.

Another Victorian recipient was the Elorel Architecture of Windsor, which was presented along with the emerging architectural practice gong.
House Magazine editor and award jury chair Alexa Kempton said many winning houses showed creativity, including several sustainable designs including sawmill Treehouse.
Mr Walker said the cabin owner spent a lot of time camping on the property before commissioning the cabin.

As a result, she fell in love with its tall trees and did not want to remove anything during construction.
The client asked Mr. Walker to design a small house to share with her family and friends, and she also rented a short stay.
It features a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room and offers services hidden under the floor and behind the stairs.
In high-risk bush areas, its exterior material is wood-free steel when wood is not flammable.

Mr Walker said it was located near the ditch, which created some difficulties in collecting water from the surrounding area during its design process.
His innovative solution is to place the house on stilts and allow water to flow underneath.
“The large tall trees that fill the area are inspired by tall pillars based on the trunks,” Mr Walker said.
“They stretched through buildings like trees.”
Another small building in the location has a garage, laundry room and outdoor kitchen.

Mr Walker describes his client as the real hero of the project because “when you have more space, choose to build something small to achieve courage.”
“Real estate agents suggest that if they decide to sell a four-bedroom home, a three-bath home will get the best price,” he said.
He noted that it may be difficult for banks to value one-bedroom homes in rural areas, while planning and building permits for smaller projects will require greater consultants, reports and approvals.
“So after all the efforts, it’s not a trivial matter to resist the urge to simply use substance use and add additional bedrooms,” Mr Walker said.
“In a system that rewards redundant, choosing less construction – not out of necessity but out of principle – is even more important than the material itself.
